By virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 1385, s. 1975, the period of February 14 to 20 of every year has been designated as the National Intellectual Disability Week. As the national repository of printed and recorded cultural heritage, and other intellectual, literary and information sources, the National Library of the Philippines (NLP) supports this yearly observance.
The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) defines intellectual disability as “a disability characterized by significant limitations in both intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior, which covers many everyday social and practical skills. This disability originates before the age of 22.”
