146th Birth Anniversary of Pres. Manuel L. Quezon

Today, the National Library of the Philippines commemorates the 146th birth anniversary of former President Manuel L. Quezon, born on August 19, 1878, in Baler, El Principe (now Aurora). He went on to become the second president of the Philippines and is revered as the “Ama ng Wikang Pambansa.” Republic Act No. 6741 declares August 19 of each year as Quezon Day.

On July 20, 1935, then-Senator Quezon was nominated as the President of the Philippines. In his acceptance speech, he passionately declared, “I am anxious to see our independence established at the earliest possible date. I look upon it as the most precious reward for the many years of ceaseless efforts that I have spent in its quest…”
